Pre Surgery Diet Instructions for Laparoscopy

Bowel Preparation - 1 Day Liquid Only Diet

The procedure you are having requires an unhindered view of the pelvis, which means the intestinal tract needs to be empty. This will aid surgery and reduce the incidence of operative complications.

It is essential for the safety of your surgery that you adhere to the following low-residue diet.

DAY BEFORE SURGERY

  • No solids
  • Clear fluid (anything the sun can shine through)
  • No milk products

Example: water, clear fruit juices (apple, blackcurrent), clear stock soups, herbal teas, soft drinks.

DAY OF SURGERY

If you are having morning surgery: have nothing to eat or drink from midnight. Can have water until 5 AM

If you are having afternoon surgery: Do NOT eat any solids after 07 00 AM. and water are allowed until 10.00 am only.

 

RECOMMENDED MENU

Breakfast

  • Clear soup eg. chicken, beef or vegetable
  • Tea/herbal drink/ water Apple/ blackcurrant

Morning Tea

  • Gatorade
  • Jelly
  • Tea/herbal drink/ water

Lunch

  • Clear soup eg. chicken, beef or vegetable
  • Apple/ blackcurrant juice/water
  • Jelly

Afternoon Tea

  • Gatorade
  • Tea/herbal drink/ water
  • Apple/ blackcurrant juice

Dinner

  • Clear soup eg. chicken, beef or vegetable
  • Jelly
  • Tea/herbal drink/ water
  • Gatorade

Supper

  • Jelly
  • Gatorade
  • Tea/herbal drink/ water
  • Apple/ blackcurrant juice

Things To Remember

  • Make sure that you have plenty of water as well as the suggested diet.
  • It is very important that you have soups either made with stock cubes or in the tetra packs eg. Campbells clear stock soups to replace the salts that you will lose through not eating
  • If you can’t prepare jellies at home these are available as jelly cups in the supermarket.
  • Sugar can be used in your tea if applicable
